English:Lizzy Pauwels (Q1592198)
In an oeuvre that encompasses paintings, video, sculptures, and performances, Lizzy Pauwels focuses on the immutability of stones and their resistance to decay. Whereas people usually attempt to harness this permanence by transforming stones into buildings, jewelry, sculptures, and graves, she observes them in their natural complexity — as carriers of information from the past and of a continuity that surpasses human existence.
A pictorial hesitation recurs throughout her work: her images feel fragile and unfinished. Persistent paint drips on a canvas, scraped textures reminiscent of flaking skin — everything reflects a deliberate release of excessive control. She does not regard the stone as something to be conquered, but as a vehicle for reflecting on ecological issues, rituals, and cultural artefacts, among other things.
