  2. Culture
  3. Family and Population
  4. Health
  5. Education
  6. Social Policy
  7. Social and Political Opinion Research
  8. Survey Methodology
  9. Theoretical Sociology

Research in the field of sociology of culture mainly follows two lines:

  • First, theoretical and empirical research is carried out with current trend-setting cultural sociological concepts and insights as a starting point. Directive concepts are notably: individualisation and globalisation, the distinction modernity vs. post-modernity (and related to this, structural evolutions like functional differentiation and secularisation), and the social role of science and technique. This focus recently resulted in studies about the culture of consumption and youth culture.
  • The second line of research relates to the sociology of art, and includes fundamental and policy-oriented studies in the field of the performing arts and the plastic arts. Special emphasis is placed on the field- structuring role of art organisations on the one hand, and on the possibility of a 'sociology of the personal work of art' on the other.
