The AFF is the main venue in Belgium where African short films and documentaries are
shown. Workshops with screenings are held at M, the new city museum in Leuven.
For public screenings, a large part of the AFF's audience consists of women with children, while unsubtitled films are attended by film specialists and students. The workshops also attract a more specialized audience.
The AFF was established in 1996 and is the only international annual African film festival in the Benelux. Over the past 15 years it has built up a unique knowledge of cinema in Central and Southern Africa, which it shares with international film festivals worldwide such as Leipzig, Tarifa, Maputo, Vernona, Berlin, Bahia, etc.
