From the outset of his artistic practice, Stijn Ank has shown a clear interest in the organic growth of his work, without too much interference of strategies, significances, etc…

The sculptures that Ank creates come to life trough a laborious process which consists of pouring pigmented plaster in multiform molds. Improvisation and serendipity serve as the basic concepts for a creative research into the nature of present-day sculpture.

Ank seems to avoid fitting into the artistic hegemony of a stylistically justified mannerism by adhering to an intrepid and refreshing subjectivity, which surprises us through its formally and aesthetically complex imagery.

The works in his oeuvre are not site-defining. They function as anti-volumes, volatile and momentary fragments of an infinite, fortuitous 'folding process' that evades any kind of fixed interpretation.

Odd as it may seem, the heavy material of the plaster evokes a lightness of colours that both reveals the sensual traces of the working process and lays bare the emptiness around the work itself.
