Servi van Grinsven tries to build up an oeuvre, unrelated to any particular tendencies, in which he examines the possibilities of painting.  His paintings were initially, in the eighties, totally abstract, but his visual idiom has since then evolved towards ostensibly simple, recognizable images. 
Van Grinsven makes the viewer aware of the fact that painting involves the creation of a certain illusion, resulting in an extremely consistent use of a visual language. 
Using transparent, subdued colors, his aim is not simply to copy reality but rather to reformulate it. 
He goes in search of contemporary images, making reference to his own visual experience and designation of place and space.
