The score he composed for the film ‘Moscow, Belgium’ earned Belgian accordionist Tuur Florizoone a nomination for the European Film Awards (which are like the European Academy Awards). The ‘Mixtuur’ project sees Tuur experiment with a variety of cultures, styles and instruments.
Florizoone has selected a throng of artists from a mixed background: cellist Marine Horbaczewski (Belgium/Ukraine/Italy) tuba player Michel Massot (Belgian/Congo) and percussionist Chris Joris, who is one hundred percent Belgian, but is heavily influenced by black music. Aly Keita from Cameroon is a world-class Balafon player, young drummer Wendlavim hails from Burkina Faso, singer Tutu Poane has South-African roots. They will be joined by the Congolese chorus Nabindibo and core Mixtuur members Nicolas Thys and sound artist/trumpet player Laurent Blondiau.
Florizoone wrote the compositions especially for Mixed 2010, a project focusing on Congolese children born out of ‘forbidden’ mixed race relationships who were placed in Belgian foster care.
