exitlab.org is a philosophical/experimental lab that developed out of a series of digital experiments, installations, and philosophical reflections on technology.

The aim of exitlab.org is the creation of fragmentary cartographies of our technological world. The maps consist of digital environments, sometimes linked to a physical installation: multi-user environments, installations, blogs. They arise from a reflection on our interaction with reality, more precisely on techniques that we design to keep a distance from reality.

The involvement in experiments with complex biological and social systems was the basis for the development of 3D multi-user environments in the beginning of 1996 (CyberTheatre, Brussels, Belgium; Virtual Worlds, Paris, France; Siggraph, Orlando, USA). Collaborations with artists and engineers (Sesuad'ra) resulted in multi-user experiments that were situated on the edge between technology, science and art. Standalone-installations were also created (JesusXsuperart, 2000, Heusen-Zolder, Belgium).

exitlab.org is linked to EXIT vzw, an organization focusing on new media and art. Within this context the relation between the virtual and the physical environment was explored with a group of artists and engineer in 1999 and 2000, in a network of expositions and connected web-environments. Other projects are the write-experiment in Flemish libraries in 2000 (in collaboration with hundreds of cyber-writers) and the 'dynamical architecture'-environment (@rtef@ct-festival, Brabant, Belgium; I3 workshop, Porto, Portugal; Cursor project, Tokyo, Japan, 2002).
