The Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Film, one of Europe's biggest and oldest fantastic festivals, wants to promote genre cinema to a broad audience. The BIFFF aims for discovery and confrontation instead of easy entertainment, without denying the fun part of course (playing with genre conventions, active audience participation…) ! With conferences and lectures, public encounters and numerous side activities (animation, exhibitions, contests, the vampire ball, the body painting contest…) we create a framework in which the movies and the genre in general can be seen within a broader cultural and social context (sci-fi as a social utopia, horror as catharsis). With our broad panorama of international fantastic films, reflecting the wealth, versatility and cultural diversity of the genre, we want to demolish the many prejudices about fantastic film and set a quality benchmark in a genre that's still too often trivialized. Being a Belgian festival, we also want to encourage and actively support the production and realization of Belgian fantastic short and long features as much as possible (Fantastic Brussels workshop, The Belgian Fantastic Movie Day, a tax shelter seminar…).
