A PriorMagazine, remarkably low on ads and high on content, is distributed worldwide in specialized bookstores and museums. Unique in providing a very select number of artists, critics and curators with as much as 300 pages of 'exhibition space' and space for critical and curatorial exploration, A Prior has managed to distinguish itself for its 'total concept approach'. In addition to two regular issues that are published each year, A Prior occasionally collaborates with organisations or initiatives from the field of visual culture to produce extra publications. The first such publication, Making Sense in the City, came out in December 2006, the second was relized by Raimundas Malasauskas in the context of Documenta12 Magazines. CONCEPT, APPROACH, READERS A Prior commissions the lead artist of each issue of A Prior to create entirely new work, which is presented on approximately 80 pages of text and high quality images. This central monographic section is realized in close collaboration with the artist, so that the artist, as it were, assumes the role of an editor. By featuring two more, but always related, artists in the rest of the issue, the showcased works are provided with not only a theoretical, but also an artistic framework. Owing to such contextualization, the artists are prompted to further examine and contemplate their work, with the result that some projects originally realized in A Prior later find their way to exhibition spaces around the world. As it is not A Prior's aim to merely report on and review developments in contemporary art – but rather to place them in their proper context and subject them to deeper analysis – A Prior is aimed at an audience with a keen and serious interest in up-to-the-minute artistic practices. In other words, in contrast to most international art magazines, where the reader has to wade her way through bits of information, reporting and reviewing – interrupted by ads and announcements – A Prior creates an "environment" in which the reader can become immersed and absorbed in the subject matter.
